Day 2 · Getting Started with Mark

The Controversial Jesus

Awaken

Yesterday, Jesus was a wildly popular healer everyone loved. Today, that starts to change — because Jesus is about to do something only God is allowed to do, and the religious leaders notice immediately.

Behold

Passage: Mark 2:1-12

Read the passage. Before Jesus does anything about the paralyzed man's legs, what does He address first? Why do the religious teachers call this blasphemy?

Internalize

  1. Sins forgiven before legs healed. Four friends are so desperate to get their paralyzed friend to Jesus that they dig a hole through a roof. But when Jesus sees the man, He doesn't start with his legs — He starts with his soul: "Son, your sins are forgiven." To the religious teachers, this is blasphemy; only God can forgive sins. Jesus essentially replies, Exactly. He heals the man's body to prove He has the authority to heal his soul.

  2. Breaking the checklist. From there, Jesus keeps breaking their religious rules — He eats with tax collectors and "sinners," and He heals a man on the Sabbath, the holy day of rest. Jesus is showing that true religion isn't about perfectly keeping a checklist; it's about a heart restored by grace.

Quick check

Why did Jesus forgive the paralyzed man's sins before healing his legs?

What does Jesus' willingness to eat with "sinners" and heal on the Sabbath reveal about true religion, according to today's lesson?

Do

Take a few minutes with the questions below — your answers are private.

Reflect

Today's one small act: Reach out to one person today who might feel like an outsider — at work, in your family, or in your neighborhood — and simply spend five minutes making them feel welcome, no agenda attached.

Entrust

Tell someone: "Jesus dealt with a man's soul before He dealt with his legs. He was more concerned with what was broken on the inside than what was broken on the outside."

Gospel Appeal: Notice which you actually want fixed first when you come to God — the visible stuff people can see, or the soul underneath it, the way Jesus addressed the paralyzed man. No amount of cleaning up the visible stuff earns the forgiveness only Jesus can give; that man couldn't walk his way into being forgiven any more than you can behave your way into it. Jesus didn't wait for proof of worthiness before speaking forgiveness — he spoke it first, then proved his authority with the miracle everyone could see. He's alive now, still speaking forgiveness before you've fixed anything, interceding as your great High Priest for the very things you'd rather clean up yourself before coming to him. If you've never let him deal with the soul before the symptoms, today can be the day. And if you already have, let today be the day you stop presenting him your tidied-up version and bring the actual mess.

Add Mark 2:5 to your memorization deck and say it once out loud before you close this lesson.

Memory verse

Mark 2:5

Pray — in your own words, or borrow this: "Jesus, I am amazed by Your grace. Thank You that You did not come for the healthy, but for the sick. I confess that I am broken and in need of Your forgiveness. Heal my heart, and help me to show Your radical welcome to the outcasts around me. In the wonderful name of Jesus, amen."

Tomorrow: the crowds grow massive, and Jesus starts teaching in riddles — stories that hide the Kingdom from hard hearts and reveal it to hungry ones.
