Day 7 · Getting Started with Mark
The Turning Point
Awaken
Jesus asks His disciples one question that changes everything: "Who do you say I am?" Peter gets the title right — and then discovers he had no idea what the title actually meant.
Behold
Passage: Mark 8:27-38
Read the passage. What does Peter answer when Jesus asks who He is? What does Jesus say has to happen to Him next — and how does Peter react?
Internalize
The right title, the wrong expectation. We've reached the absolute center and turning point of Mark's Gospel. Jesus takes His disciples away and asks the ultimate question: "Who do you say I am?" Peter answers correctly: "You are the Messiah." But the moment Peter gets the title right, Jesus has to redefine what it means. The Jews expected a Messiah who would ride in on a warhorse, slaughter the Romans, and take the throne. Instead, Jesus says He's going to suffer, be rejected, and be killed. Peter is so offended he actually tries to rebuke Jesus — and Jesus fires back, "Get behind me, Satan!" because Peter is favoring the things of men over the things of God.
The cost, and the proof. Jesus then issues the call of a lifetime: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." A few days later, Jesus goes up a mountain and is transfigured — His divine glory shines through His humanity, proving that the suffering path He's choosing is exactly the will of the Father.

Today's one small act: Answer Jesus' question in writing today: "Who do you say I am?" Write one full sentence, honestly, and keep it somewhere you'll see it again this week.
Entrust
Share with someone: "Peter got the right title for Jesus but the wrong expectation. I want to make sure my picture of Jesus matches who He actually said He is."
Gospel Appeal: Notice if you want the right label for Jesus — Christian, believer, follower — more than you actually want what following him costs. That's Peter's exact mistake: getting the title right while resisting the substance underneath it. No amount of correct theology about Jesus substitutes for actually denying yourself and following him; you can have Peter's confession without Peter's cross, and that's precisely the comfortable faith Jesus refuses to bless. Jesus didn't rebuke Peter's confession — he corrected Peter's picture. And the same Jesus who walked toward the cross Peter wanted him to avoid is now, resurrected, your great High Priest, interceding to give you the very strength to actually carry whatever cross he's calling you to. If you've never actually let his answer to "who do you say I am" cost you anything, today can be the day. And if you already have, let today's written answer be honest about the gap between the title you'd give him and the life you're actually living under it.
Add Mark 8:34 to your memorization deck and say it once out loud before you close this lesson.
Memory verse
Pray — in your own words, or borrow this: "Lord Jesus, I confess that You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Forgive me when I, like Peter, want a comfortable faith without a cross. I do believe; help my unbelief! Give me the courage to deny myself and follow You today. In Jesus' name, amen."
Tomorrow: as they walk toward Jerusalem, the disciples argue about who's the greatest — while Jesus is trying to tell them He's about to die.
