Day 4 · Getting Started with Mark

Three Impossible Situations

Awaken

Demons, disease, and death — in the space of one chapter, Jesus walks straight into all three, the most impossible situations any of these people have ever faced, and walks out having conquered every one.

Behold

Passage: Mark 5:21-43

Read the passage. What does Jesus do the moment He realizes someone touched Him in the crowd? What does He say to Jairus the instant Jairus receives word his daughter has died?

Internalize

  1. Set free with a word. Mark 5 is one of the most intense and beautiful chapters in the Bible. Jesus first meets a man possessed by a legion of demons, living in tombs and cutting himself. Jesus sets him free with a word.

  2. Seen and named. Then two stories intertwine. A synagogue leader, Jairus, begs Jesus to come heal his dying daughter. While they're rushing to her, a woman who has been bleeding for twelve years — bankrupt, untouchable, chronically suffering — sneaks up and touches Jesus' clothes. She's instantly healed. Jesus stops everything to look her in the eye and call her "Daughter," making sure she's healed not just physically, but socially and emotionally.

  3. Master over death. While this happens, Jairus receives word his daughter has died. Jesus tells him, "Don't be afraid; just believe." He goes and raises the little girl back to life. Demons, disease, and death — Jesus is Master over them all. Whatever impossible situation you named in today's small act, it's not outside what he's already shown himself capable of touching.

Quick check

Why did Jesus stop everything to identify the woman who touched His garment?

What was Jesus' response when Jairus received word that his daughter had died?

Do

Take a few minutes with the questions below — your answers are private.

Reflect

Today's one small act: Name one "impossible" situation you're currently facing — health, a relationship, a fear. Write it on a card and put it somewhere you'll see it daily this week as a prayer reminder.

Entrust

Share with someone: "Jesus stopped in the middle of an emergency to look one overlooked woman in the eye. That tells me something about how He sees people society tends to ignore."

Gospel Appeal: Notice if some part of you has quietly decided your own "impossible" situation is too far gone, too embarrassing, or too small to actually bring to Jesus — that's exactly what the crowd would have said about a bleeding, ceremonially unclean woman. No impossible situation gets less impossible by you managing it alone longer; twelve years of trying everything else is exactly how long it took her to finally just reach out. Jesus didn't heal her from a comfortable distance — he stopped everything, sought her out, and called her "Daughter." He's not less attentive now; he's your great High Priest, interceding specifically for the exact thing you wrote down in today's small act. If you've never actually brought him your impossible thing instead of managing it alone, today can be the day. And if you already have, bring it again — Jairus had to keep walking toward Jesus even after the worst news arrived.

Add Mark 5:36 to your memorization deck and say it once out loud before you close this lesson.

Memory verse

Mark 5:36

Pray — in your own words, or borrow this: "Lord, You are the Master of the impossible. You are not intimidated by my mess, my sickness, or my deepest fears. Thank You for looking at me with compassion, just as You looked at the bleeding woman. Give me the faith of Jairus to trust You when all hope seems lost. In the precious name of Jesus, amen."

Tomorrow: Jesus returns to His own hometown — and is completely rejected by the people who watched Him grow up.
