Day 6 · Getting Started with Mark
Outside the Borders
Awaken
What actually makes a person "unclean" — dirt on the hands, or something deeper? The religious leaders think they know the answer. Jesus is about to completely rewrite the question.
Behold
Passage: Mark 7:14-23
Read the passage. According to Jesus, what actually makes a person "unclean" before God? Where does He say that defilement originates?
Internalize
Clean from the inside out. The Pharisees attack Jesus again, this time because His disciples don't wash their hands according to strict religious tradition. Jesus uses the moment to redefine what makes a person "clean." It's not dirt on your hands or the food you eat that makes you unclean before God — it's the sin that comes out of your heart: greed, malice, deceit, envy, pride. You can't clean yourself up from the outside in. You need God to change you from the inside out.
A love without borders. To prove that God's grace can't be contained by human religious borders, Jesus travels into Gentile territory. He heals the demon-possessed daughter of a Syrophoenician woman, and He heals a man who is deaf and mute. Finally, He feeds another massive crowd — but this time, it's a Gentile crowd. The good news is not for one nation. It's for the whole world.

Today's one small act: Name one specific thing on Jesus' list — greed, malice, deceit, envy, pride — that you've been minimizing. Confess it honestly to God today, out loud, in a single sentence.
Entrust
Tell someone: "Jesus said it's not what goes into you that makes you unclean, but what comes out of your heart. That completely changes how I think about being a 'good person.'"
Gospel Appeal: Notice how much of your own sense of standing with God rests on outward respectability — the right habits, the right appearances — while something on Jesus's actual list (greed, malice, envy, pride) quietly runs underneath it. No amount of clean hands changes a dirty heart; scrubbing the outside was never going to reach what's actually named on that list. Only Jesus cleans from the inside out, and he doesn't do it with a stricter checklist — he does it by giving you himself, crossing every border, including whatever one you've quietly built around your own heart. He's interceding right now as your great High Priest for the exact thing you named in today's small act. If you've never let him in past the outward stuff, today can be the day. And if you already have, let today be the day you stop managing the border and let him keep crossing it.
Add Mark 7:15 to your memorization deck and say it once out loud before you close this lesson.
Memory verse
Pray — in your own words, or borrow this: "Father, forgive me for the times I try to look holy on the outside while my heart is far from You. Cleanse me from the inside out. Thank You that Your love crosses all borders, races, and backgrounds, and that Your table has a seat for me. In the name of Jesus, amen."
Tomorrow: we hit the exact center of Mark's Gospel, where Jesus asks His disciples the one question that matters most: "Who do you say I am?"
